“Heyoka” is a Lakota word that references the sacred clowns who bring an alternate point of view (often inappropriately) to an otherwise serious situation. Looking at things from these angles can be very enlightening and sometimes life changing.
I have been heyoka all my life, although it wasn’t until I found my spiritual teacher that I recognized this reflection in me, which gave me the permission to walk more intentionally in these shoes. This gift has served me and a host of others well in interpreting the messages and symbolism received during any of my shamanic offerings.
